A reflection on loss in the dark of winter.
You Ain't Here
2025 Barry Seymour
The wind is blowin harder, pushin me around - This sidewalks flat but it feels like a hill
The cold is bitin harder now the suns gone down - Gettin homes become a test of will
The door is froze, I fumble with my fingers - My bags weigh moren they did back at the store
The old crow by the feeder doesnt linger - Cause you aint here to feed him any more
You ain't here to make this broken house into a home
You ain't here to help me warm the bed
You ain't here to take me back each time I roam
I long to hear again all the forgiving words you said
A TV meal for supper, in my easy chair - dogs got a bone to keep him occupied
The clock is tickin louder on the mantle there - The emptiness just makes it amplified
You ain't here when I come through the mudroom door
You ain't here to help me make a pie
You aint here to pick your ring up from the drawer
You ain't here to help me out with how to say goodbye
The night gets cold, I turn up the heater - Christmas lights still up past Groundhog Day
I guess I'll put some seed back in the feeder - Perhaps that crow will have something new to say
You ain't here to make this broken house into a home
You aint here with me to break our bread
You aint here to rescue me from being alone
To fill my heart again with all the loving words you said
